Domain Names

The first question some people might have is, "What is a domain name?"

In non-technical terms, a domain name is an easy to remember textual address that people use rather than the true numeric address to a machine on the Internet.  (Instead of telling a friend to look up your Web site at http://207.49.29.12 it's easier to use a domain name like http://www.vette.net.)

How It Works.
Your current Web address isn't replaced.  You can still use it, give it to friends, or whatever - just like before.  However, now you can add another address that is "mapped" or forwarded to your original one.

An example might be that your current home page is located at http://www.company.com/members/~johndoe/
How would you like to have your page located at
http://indy.vette.net/ instead?  This can be done without physically moving your Web pages!  You're not giving up an address – and you'll project your admiration for the Corvette to others.  Just think of it as your very own specialized address forwarding service.
